Deirdre was born and raised amidst the natural beauty of Alaska, however her family roots extend far south to the teeming streets of Mexico City and the far shores of Ireland and Scotland.
Deirdre’s drawings and paintings are strongly reminiscent of the Renaissance art of northern Italy. She studied at the prestigious Florence Academy of Art in Italy for a year and before that at the Art Institute of Southern California after being awarded an art scholarship. Her formal art training however, began with private lessons taught by classical realist Kamille Corry, whom she studied with for five years.
Deirdre also studied literature at Westminster College and recently has begun combining her passion for travel with her interest in writing. To date she has traveled to over 30 countries and completed her first book, Between Light and Shadow: A Painter’s Journey, about her painting trips to Mexico and then Morocco. As she traveled she hired locals to sit as models and spent months painting the changing light on Aztec ruins and the haunting tapestry lined alleyways of Essaouira. She is currently working on her second book about a trip through India.
Deirdre knew from the beginning that she wanted to be an artist, and dedicated herself to that discipline from an early age. She has won numerous juried art shows, been exhibited in museums and galleries and had her writing featured in literary magazines.
